Job Description: IT Project Manager
Project Scope:
Project #1: SharePoint 2016 Migration to SharePoint Online (SPO) The Government of Alberta (GoA) is planning to upgrade from SharePoint 2016 to SharePoint Online. The IT Project Manager will play a key role in managing and coordinating the migration process. Key responsibilities include:
Engaging with business Migration Leads to explain and facilitate the use of the Migration Assistance Planner (MAP) tool.
Collaborating with the Collaboration and Content Management Services (CCS) team to execute move, add, and change activities associated with SharePoint sites and content migration.
Coordinating with Ministry partners to assess the current SharePoint site inventory and determine their post-migration end state.
Overseeing the assessment of SharePoint sites with exceptions and ensuring effective transition plans are developed and executed.
Managing the retirement of the SharePoint 2016 infrastructure post-migration.
Project #2: Cybersecurity Vulnerability Mitigation Program This project aims to mitigate cybersecurity vulnerabilities by ensuring Microsoft servers nearing or reaching end-of-life are upgraded. The IT Project Manager will be responsible for:
Scheduling and coordinating with Service Owners to establish start and end dates for server upgrades or decommissioning.
Organizing follow-up meetings to confirm and maintain project timelines.
Overseeing the successful completion of all server upgrades and associated activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Coordinate and manage the end-to-end delivery of IT projects, ensuring timelines, responsibilities, and deliverables are clearly defined and met.
Develop and maintain project charters and business/project plans to align with business objectives and data integrity.
Manage the documentation of business requirements, design IT solutions, and ensure compliance with the Ministries' enterprise architecture.
Identify and document project dependencies, interdependencies, resource requirements, and policy implications.
Prepare and present project deliverables to internal teams, steering committees, and key stakeholders.
Ensure effective project governance and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Establish and maintain clear communication with project sponsors and stakeholders, including the escalation of risks and issues.
Foster collaborative relationships with business and IT leadership to define project scope, objectives, timelines, resource needs, risks, benefits, and budget.
Design and implement a comprehensive project organization structure, clearly defining roles and responsibilities.
Document and report on project status, including tracking milestones, budgets, and resources, and ensuring the resolution of issues and risks.
Develop detailed project schedules, estimate resource requirements, and monitor work plans to ensure successful project delivery.
Provide guidance and leadership to project team members, ensuring prioritization and timely delivery of tasks.
Conduct post-project reviews to evaluate outcomes, identify improvement opportunities, and apply lessons learned to future initiatives.
Support business and project teams in managing change and communication activities.
Ensure compliance with project management office (PMO) standards and contribute to the development of new standards when required.
Equipment Requirements:
The resource must provide their own equipment, including a modern version of Windows or MacOS compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and related remote access software (Windows preferred).
In case of remote work, the contractor is responsible for providing all necessary equipment (e.g., computer, software, printer, desk, and chair).
The Province will ensure access and credentials to the Government of Alberta systems are provided.
Qualifications:
Proven experience managing complex IT projects, including SharePoint migrations and server upgrade programs.
Strong understanding of SharePoint 2016 and SharePoint Online environments, including migration best practices.
Experience coordinating cybersecurity mitigation initiatives, particularly around server lifecycle management.
Excellent project management skills, including planning, scheduling, tracking, and risk management.
Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities, with experience collaborating across technical and business teams.
Proficiency in developing project documentation, including charters, status reports, and business cases.
Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
Familiarity with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and remote work infrastructure is preferred.
This position requires an adaptable, detail-oriented professional with the ability to drive successful project delivery while maintaining effective communication with all stakeholders.
